NBA Playoff Series Breakdown
Thunder Swept the Suns 4-0 — Done
OKC rolled Phoenix in four straight, winning the clincher 131-122. Third consecutive first-round sweep for the Thunder. They're waiting for the Lakers-Rockets winner.
Futures note: Monitor Jalen Williams' hamstring. He tweaked it in Game 2. If he's limited in Round 2, that changes OKC's ceiling.
Celtics Lead 76ers 3-1 — Closeout Tonight
Joel Embiid returned in Game 4 after a 17-day appendectomy absence and scored 26 — but the Celtics blew the doors off, winning 128-96. Payton Pritchard dropped 32 with 6 threes. Jayson Tatum had 30 and 11 assists.
Betting angle: Embiid is back but rusty. Boston's shooting is overwhelming Philly's defense. Celtics at home in a closeout game — this should be over tonight.
Magic Lead Pistons 3-1 — 1-Seed Upset Alert
The biggest upset of the first round. Orlando stunned 60-win Detroit on the road in Game 1 and has controlled the series since. Paolo Banchero's leading a balanced attack — all five starters scored 16+ in the opener.
Betting angle: 1-seeds facing elimination at home win about 55% of the time. Detroit is live if this goes to Game 5 at home, but Orlando's balance makes them hard to scheme for defensively.
Knicks vs. Hawks — Tied 2-2 — GAME TONIGHT
The most competitive series in the East. Atlanta stole Game 2 at MSG, overcoming a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit (107-106). Trade acquisitions Jonathan Kuminga and CJ McCollum have been huge off the bench for the Hawks. But the Knicks responded with a 114-98 blowout in Game 4 — Karl-Anthony Towns triple-double (20/10/10).
Betting angle: Home team has won every game except Atlanta's Game 2 heist. Knicks at MSG in a pivotal Game 5 should be formidable. This is the swing game of the East playoffs.
Timberwolves Lead Nuggets 3-2 — Injury Chaos
This series is a mess. Anthony Edwards: hyperextended knee, OUT week-to-week. Donte DiVincenzo: torn Achilles, DONE for the season. Aaron Gordon: also OUT for Denver. Jokic dropped a triple-double (27/16/12) to keep Denver alive in Game 5, 125-113.
Betting angle: The highest-variance series left. Minnesota had control at 3-1 but lost their two best perimeter players. Denver without Gordon is also compromised. Jokic in elimination games is a different animal — his career stats in must-win playoff spots are elite. Game 6 in Minnesota will be fascinating.
Lakers Lead Rockets 3-1 — LeBron's Legacy Run
LeBron and Bronny James made history — first father-son duo to connect on a bucket in a playoff game. LeBron is averaging 21.5/8.3/8.8 for the series. The Lakers are doing this without Luka Doncic (grade 2 hamstring, out all of Round 1) and Austin Reaves.
Betting angle: Houston won Game 4 to avoid the sweep, but the Lakers' experience edge is massive. Closing out on the road is never easy. Doncic's return timeline is the real futures angle — if LA advances, getting him back for Round 2 changes the odds significantly.
Spurs Lead Blazers 3-1 — Wembanyama Show — GAME TONIGHT
Victor Wembanyama set a franchise playoff debut record with 35 points in Game 1, then suffered a concussion in Game 2 (missed Game 3). He cleared protocol and returned for Game 4, leading a 21-point comeback in a 114-93 win. De'Aaron Fox has been the steady second star.
Betting angle: San Antonio can close tonight in Portland. The Blazers are desperate at home and Scoot Henderson has emerged as a counter-punch. But healthy Wembanyama is a different tier. Spurs should advance.
NHL Playoff Series Breakdown
Completed Series
- Hurricanes swept Senators 4-0 — Carolina faces Philly in Round 2
- Flyers beat Penguins 4-2 — Classic PA rivalry, Philly took a 3-0 lead then survived Pittsburgh's push
- Avalanche swept Kings 4-0 — Colorado is rolling
Sabres Lead Bruins 3-1 — Clinch Game Tonight
Buffalo's breakout postseason. They've won three of four including a 6-1 demolition in Game 4. The Sabres can clinch tonight at home.
Betting angle: Buffalo is the fresher, hungrier team. Boston's aging core is fading. Sabres at home in a clinching game should be a strong play.
Canadiens vs. Lightning — Tied 2-2 — OT Madness
Three of four games went to overtime. Juraj Slafkovsky completed a hat trick in OT to win Game 1 for Montreal. Lane Hutson scored the OT winner in Game 3. Tampa rallied in Games 2 and 4 — Brandon Hagel scored twice in the third period of Game 4 to force the equalizer.
Betting angle: The OT frequency tells you everything — these teams are dead even. Puck lines are dangerous. Home ice has been irrelevant (road team won Games 2 and 3). Tampa's playoff pedigree vs. Montreal's young stars makes every game a coin flip. Game 5 tomorrow in Tampa.
Stars vs. Wild — Tied 2-2 — GAME TONIGHT
A physical, grueling series. Game 3 went to double overtime (Stars on a power-play goal). Game 4 was another OT affair — Matt Boldy scored with 28.9 seconds left in the first OT for Minnesota to even things up. Jesper Wallstedt has been outstanding for the Wild (43 saves in Game 4).
Betting angle: Wallstedt's goaltending is giving Minnesota a real chance against a more experienced Dallas team. Tonight in Dallas, expect another tight, low-scoring game. The under has value.
Golden Knights vs. Mammoth — Tied 2-2
Utah (in their first NHL playoff series after relocating from Arizona) led 2-1 before Vegas mounted a dramatic Game 4 comeback. The Knights trailed 4-3, tied it in the third, had a goal disallowed on a borderline offside review, then Shea Theodore scored at 19:08 of OT for the 5-4 win. Game 5 Wednesday in Vegas.
Betting angle: The momentum shift is massive. Vegas's experience and home ice for Game 5 favor the Knights. Utah's electric crowd has been a factor at home, but the disallowed goal plus the OT loss could linger.
Ducks Lead Oilers 3-1 — McDavid on the Brink — GAME TONIGHT
The biggest upset in the NHL playoffs. Anaheim, in their first postseason in 8 years, has outscored Edmonton in all four games. Ryan Poehling's OT winner in Game 4 pushed McDavid and Draisaitl to the brink. Edmonton benched their starting goalie for Tristan Jarry in Game 4 and still lost.
Betting angle: Edmonton has come back from series deficits in each of the last four postseasons. McDavid in an elimination game at home is dangerous — this is Connor McDavid we're talking about. But Anaheim's offense has been relentless and their confidence is sky-high. If you're betting the Oilers, tonight is the spot — elimination game at home, desperate team with the best player in hockey.
This Week's Top Betting Angles
- McDavid elimination game tonight — The single most compelling bet of the week. Oilers at home, season on the line, best player in hockey. The sharps will be on Edmonton.
- Knicks-Hawks Game 5 at MSG — Pivotal swing game, home team has dominated this series.
- Stars-Wild unders — Two games have gone to OT, both teams play tight defense. The under is the play tonight in Dallas.
- Nuggets Game 6 without Edwards — Jokic carrying a shorthanded roster in elimination. Watch the line closely.
- Sabres clinch — Buffalo at home, 3-1 lead, against an aging Boston team. Clean spot.
Six games tonight. The postseason is just getting started.
